How to become a life coach: steps, training, and cost

What you need, what you don't, how long it takes, and what you will pay.

To become a life coach, take six steps: (1) learn what coaching is and is not, (2) complete a coach training program, ideally one accredited by the International Coaching Federation (ICF), (3) coach real clients and log your hours, (4) work with a mentor coach, (5) earn a credential such as the ICF's Associate Certified Coach (ACC), and (6) set up your practice. Life coaching is not a licensed profession, and no degree is required.

The steps

How do you become a life coach?

You become a life coach by training in coaching skills, practicing with real clients, and then opening for business. A credential is optional, but most people who want paying clients earn one. The six steps below are the usual order.

  1. Learn what coaching is and is not

A coach helps clients set goals and act on them. A coach does not diagnose or treat mental health conditions, which is the work of licensed therapists. Knowing this boundary comes first, because it shapes everything you are trained to do.

  2. Complete a coach training program

Choose a program that teaches the ICF core competencies and includes observed practice. The ICF asks for at least 60 hours of coach education for its first credential. The Symbiosis Coaching Certified Life Coach program provides 95 ICF training hours over 24 weeks.

  3. Coach real clients and log your hours

Start coaching while you train, and keep a log of every client and session. The ACC needs 100 hours with at least 8 clients, 75 of those hours paid. The ICF counts barter coaching as paid.

  4. Work with a mentor coach

A mentor coach listens to your coaching and gives feedback against the ICF competencies. The ACC requires 10 hours of mentor coaching spread over three months or more.

  5. Earn a credential

Apply to the ICF and pass the ACC Exam. This step is optional by law, but a credential is the simplest way for a client or employer to check your training.

  6. Set up your practice

Pick a niche, set your rates, write a coaching agreement, and register your business as your local rules require. Many coaches begin part time alongside a job.

Certification

Do you need a certification to be a life coach?

No, a certification is not a legal requirement to be a life coach. Anyone may use the title "life coach."

However, if you want to coach professionally, certification is essential in practice. It is what separates a trained coach from someone who has simply adopted the title, for three reasons:

  • Skill. Coaching is a learned method. Training teaches you to listen, ask questions, and hold a client accountable without giving advice.
  • Trust. Because anyone can use the title, a certificate from an accredited school is how clients tell trained coaches from untrained ones.
  • Access. An ICF credential requires accredited training or its equivalent, so certification is the entry point to that path.

See what a certification program covers on the Certified Life Coach program page.

Licensing

Do you need a license to practice?

No. Life coaching is not a licensed profession. Coaching is self-regulated: professional bodies such as the ICF set the standards for training, ethics, and credentials, and governments do not issue life coach licenses.

People often search for a "life coach license" when they mean a certification. The two differ: a license is issued by a government and is required by law, while a certification is issued by a school or professional body and is voluntary.

Two rules still apply to every coach.

First, stay out of therapy. Diagnosing or treating a mental health condition is regulated work reserved for licensed professionals, and a coach must refer those clients on. Second, your coaching business may need to be registered, as any small business does. Check the rules where you live.

Requirements

What qualifications do you need?

You need no qualification by law. The life coach requirements that count are the ones the market and the ICF set: coach training, logged coaching experience, and mentor coaching.

Life coach qualifications, from required to optional
QualificationRequired?What it involves
LicenseNoLife coaching is not a licensed profession.
DegreeNoNeither the law nor the ICF asks for one.
Coach training certificateNot by law. Required for an ICF credential. At least 60 hours of coach education for the ACC.
Coaching experienceRequired for an ICF credential.100 hours with 8 or more clients, 75 hours paid, for the ACC.
Mentor coachingRequired for an ICF credential.10 hours over three months or more.
ICF credential (ACC)OptionalAll of the above, plus a passing score on the ACC Exam.

Personal qualities matter as well. Good coaches listen closely, stay curious, keep confidences, and are comfortable letting the client find the answer.

Education

Do you need a degree?

No. You do not need a degree to become a life coach, to enroll in coach training, or to earn an ICF credential. The ICF's ACC requirements list training, experience, mentor coaching, and an exam, and no academic degree.

A degree in psychology, education, or business can help you choose a niche and win clients in it. It does not replace coach training, because coaching is a distinct skill that those degrees do not teach.

Timeline

How long does it take?

Training takes about six months, and you can coach clients as soon as you finish it. Earning the ICF's ACC credential takes most people 9 to 15 months from their first class, because the 100 coaching hours take longer than the coursework.

How long each stage takes
StageTypical timeNotes
Coach training24 weeksThe length of the Symbiosis Coaching Certified Life Coach program: one two-hour class a week.
Mentor coaching3 months or moreAn ICF minimum. It can overlap with your training.
100 coaching hours6 to 12 monthsAt 2 to 4 client hours a week. You can begin during training.
ICF application reviewAbout 4 weeksFor graduates of accredited Level 1 or Level 2 programs.

The 9 to 15 month range and the hours-per-week figures are our estimates. The ICF sets minimums, not a schedule.

Cost

What does it cost?

Plan on about $1,600 for training alone, or about $2,800 to $2,950 to reach the ICF's ACC credential, using Symbiosis Coaching prices. Prices across schools vary widely, so compare what each price includes.

Cost to become a life coach, in US dollars
ItemCostWhat it covers
Certified Life Coach program$1,599, or six monthly payments of $33095 ICF training hours and a Certified Life Coach certificate.
Level 1 pathway$2,623The training, plus mentor coaching, the skill assessment, and Credentium access.

Three costs are easy to miss: mentor coaching when a program does not include it, business setup, and credential renewal every three years. Current prices and payment plans are on the Certified Life Coach program page.

Choosing a school

How do you choose a training program?

Choose a program that is ICF-accredited, taught live, and clear about what its price includes. Check these six points before you enroll.

Accreditation

Look the school up in the ICF's own directory. "ICF-aligned" is not the same as ICF-accredited.

Enough hours

At least 60 hours of coach education if you want the ACC.

Live practice

You should coach in class and receive feedback from an instructor.

Mentor coaching

Ask whether the 10 hours are included or sold separately.

Help with hours

Ask how the school helps you find your first clients and log 100 hours.

Schedule and price

Class times you can keep, and one total price in writing.

Certificate or credential

What's the difference between certification and credentialing?

A certification comes from your school and shows that you finished its program. A credential comes from the ICF and shows that you also met its experience, mentor coaching, and exam requirements.

You can coach with a certification alone. The credential is the next step, and it is the one that employers and corporate clients tend to ask for. Our guide to ICF credentials explained covers the ACC, PCC, and MCC in full.

Fitting it in

Can you train while working full time?

Yes. Most coach training is built for working adults, with one class a week plus practice between classes. The Certified Life Coach program meets once a week for two hours, with morning, afternoon, and evening sections.

Coaching hours fit around a job as well. Two clients a week, on evenings or weekends, is enough to reach 100 hours in about a year.

Online training

Can you qualify entirely online?

Yes. You can complete coach training, mentor coaching, and the ICF application online. Symbiosis Coaching classes are live and instructor-led on Zoom, so you practice coaching with classmates and receive feedback in real time.

Prefer live online classes over recorded video alone. Coaching is a conversation skill, and you learn it by coaching and being observed.

Symbiosis Cognium™, included with the program, adds practice with 52 AI personas between classes. These sessions build skill, but they are not client hours and do not count toward ICF experience.
